What is Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is caused by the immune system reacting to a protein called gluten. For those with coeliac disease, eating gluten damages the lining of the intestine.

Symptoms can include:

  • stomach pain
  • bloating
  • diarrhoea
  • weight loss
  • tiredness

The only treatment is to stop eating gluten.

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein. It can be found in wheat, rye and barley, and any products containing these ingredients.

For example:

  • bread
  • cakes
  • pasta
  • certain sauces.

What meals can I eat from the HILS menu?

We have specific gluten free options on our lunch menu including gluten free desserts.

These are coded as GF on our menu. They are manufactured to ensure there is no gluten contamination. Interested in our tea and breakfast options? Please get in touch and we will provide a bespoke menu to meet your needs.


Are there any gluten free foods?

There are many foods which are safe to eat. As long as they are not contaminated or processed with ingredients containing gluten.  Some examples include:

  • potatoes
  • fruit
  • vegetables
  • meat
  • fish
  • natural dairy products

But remember to always check the food label first.


Should I avoid gluten if I don’t have coeliac disease?

There are some people who are sensitive to gluten. They experience symptoms of coeliac disease  despite not having the condition. You may wish to avoid gluten to prevent these symptoms. It is important to check with your GP first so they can rule out other possible causes.


Who should I contact if I have coeliac disease?

Everybody with coeliac disease should have access to a registered dietitian for advice.  Contact your GP to arrange an appointment.
